Podcast Guides
NPR is a fount of knowledge on podcasting. Their site includes everything, from a curriculum guide for teachers to a podcast planning guide for students. Materials include handouts and videos on topics like scripting a podcast, getting high-quality voice recordings with just a cell phone, and podcast production tips. There is even a student podcast challenge with contests for high school and college students.
The New York Times Learning Network is another excellent podcasting resource. NYT offers lesson plans that walk your students through the elements of good storytelling, recording with low-tech, and podcast production. They also have a contest for students to submit their final podcast productions.
Cult of Pedagogy is a podcast for teachers by teachers. This particular episode details why podcasts work in the classroom as a listening or reading activity, and how any teacher can use podcasts to meet academic standards, including the Common Core.
The Moth's Education Program has free resources for K-12 teachers who want to bring storytelling into their classrooms, including a playlist of student-friendly stories. Whether you want to bring podcasting, digital storytelling, or even live storytelling into your classroom or school, The Moth's collection of best practices will help your students craft compelling personal stories. They also offer a Moth Teacher Institute, which is a weekend full of panels and workshops to help you bring students' voices to the forefront of the classroom.
