Lesson Plans & Handouts |
Bridge 2 Academic Writing lesson plans walk you through integrating podcasting into the beginning-level adult second language (L2) composition classroom. These lessons can be adapted for multiple class levels and across disciplines. In their current form, the lessons detail how to use podcasting as a prelude to academic writing, but podcasts can also be a culminating course project. Finally, you'll find a description of the state standards addressed in the unit if you need to justify using podcasts to your administration. Click the image to the right to download.

Rubrics
Assigning multimodal work also means assessing multimodal work. In my classroom, students collaborate and develop their own criteria for what a compelling podcast sounds like using a a single-point rubric template.
Single-point rubrics contain a single column of criteria that targets what students should focus on. This makes it easy for beginning-level English learners to read because they are not trying to discriminate between different levels of how they might meet or fail to meet expectations. It also allows you, or a peer reviewer, to provide higher quality feedback because you must specify problem areas or areas of excellence. I have had success using this type of rubric with beginning L2 learners for a variety of writing projects. |
Podcast Models
The options for podcasts are endless, and they come in a range of genres, from storytelling to true crime, to news and celebrity interviews. Below are a few of my favorites for modeling storytelling to students that also feature diverse speakers.
